Photo of the Month - exploring the Story behind the Image...Sunset at the Horse and Garden Organic FarmYear: 2009, Month: MayCanada > Nova Scotia > WindsorI try not to take too many sunsets, as despite their obvious popularity with viewers, they hold little interest in the publishing business. What have all sunset photographs in common? A beautiful sky will contrast the blacker-than-black silhouettes of trees, people, or buildings. But wait a minute - this photograph is a little different. Why is that? A clue can be found in the image name: 'E0199-203.jpg'. This image is a composite image, created from 5 different exposures of the same scene. Each exposure had a different setting, though. In this case, the five shots were taken with 2 F-stops under exposed, 1 F-stop under exposed, the correct exposure, 1 F-stop over exposed, and 2 F-stops over exposed. Some clever software combines the images seamlessly, and the end result is an image that the brain thinks as normal, because the image covers a dynamic range that the eye and the brain are used to. The digital camera, even a high-end digital camera can never take such a photo though, as its electronic image sensor just doesn't have the ability to capture such a wide range of light values. Hence the need for multiple photos of the same scene. |
