Photo of the Month - exploring the Story behind the Image...

Orange Spheres advertise the Orange Brand

Orange Spheres advertise the Orange Brand

Year: 2010, Month: December

Senegal > Dakar > Dakar

Continuing the orange theme on from last month's offering, we have now moved further south through West Africa and have now arrived in the capital city of Senegal, Dakar. Though not a popular traveller's resting place, and often the site of some of Africa's more notorious tricksters and conmen, it nevertheless has its own particular charms, a justly famous nightlife, and venue for a wide range of arts and film festivals.

This month's photo of the month shows none of this, but chooses as its subject an abstract conical structure erected to advertise the business of telecom-giant 'Orange'. A lattice of stainless steel, it stands some 20 metres high, towering above passers-by in the centrally located 'Place de l'Indépendance'.

Within this huge cone hang a number of orange spheres, and my eye caught the photographic possibilities when viewing the scene from a number of different angles. This one, my favorite, was taken at the base of the cone, looking up towards its summit. From this viewpoint it appears to show a tower of almost infinite height. The deep blue of Senegal's winter sky contrasts perfectly with the brilliant saturated orange color of the spheres. The converging lines of the stainless steel structure pull the eye past the series of ever-decreasing spheres to a point at the photograph's centre. Viewed from the outside, this structure was interesting, but viewed from this alternative angle, the resultant image becomes truly memorable.
