Photo of the Month - exploring the Story behind the Image...

Palm leaf in Amazon camp

Palm leaf in Amazon camp

Year: 2010, Month: July

Brazil > Amazonas > Manaus

On the face of it, there are not very many straight lines or regularly occuring patterns in nature, but occasionally I do chance upon them, and when this happens, there is often a good photograph to be taken as well. This image, of a palm leaf seen whilst travelling through the Amazon jungle near Manaus, is a classic example of good photographic composition, just waiting to be taken. The skill of the photographer is seeing the image in the first place. I showed the photograph to some of my companions, soon after it was taken, and though they were standing just feet away, they could not identify where or when it might have been photographed.

I did not adjust the leaf in any way at all, preferring the natural inconsistencies in the pattern to add a more organic feel to the photograph, though given time, I might have attempted to level-up some of the vertical fronds to even the spacing between them. In the studio, this might have been easy enough, but in the depths of the jungle, with mosquitoes and other insects buzzing around, I did not feel like spending much stationary time doing this - better to keep walking! This image was therefore taken as is, and has not even been cropped or re-aligned in any way.
