Photo of the Month - exploring the Story behind the Image...Idyllic Pacific Island with Beach and Palm TreesYear: 2014, Month: AugustCook Islands > Aitutaki > Ootu BeachThis photo created a bit of a storm when I shared it with my FaceBook friends: receiving some of the highest 'Like' clicks for any of my images posted online. I guess that I must be doing something right! The photograph was, of course, planned to have that effect, creating an image that would be easy to identify, and that people would instantly tie up with their mind's eye view of what an idyllic Pacific Island should be like. The eye of the viewer glides from the coconut palm in the foreground, along the gentle curve of the deserted beach, to the repetitious continuation of yet more coconut palms in the distance, fading away to the horizon and giving a feeling of peace and tranquility in a blue-sky setting that is there for the taking: a private paradise such as we have all dreamed of, and hope one day to find. After half a year spent visiting many of the major Pacific Island groups, my advice would be to carefully do your research first, as the different island nations can be quite different from one another, and your personal view of what the ideal Pacific island should be like may not always be the same as the Pacific island that you get to. Aitutaki, in the Cook Islands, is one of the most visited in that chain, and looking at this photo its not too hard to see why. Give it a try one day, and I'm sure that you will like it there too. |
