Blonde man with Fishes

Blonde man with Fishes

Year: 2010, Month: August

Brazil > Goias > Alto Paraiso

Who says that the wildlife we encounter when travelling the world is always shy and retiring? Here, in this shallow channel that feeds the River Tocantins, the fish couldn't wait to get acquainted with this Danish guy. Attracted by small pieces of cream-cracker biscuit, the fishes were soon as friendly as anyone could wish, and flocked around in the hope of further biscuit offerings. When the biscuits ran out, they gently nibbled small pieces of dead skin from Jesper's feet.

Its always an honour to me when wildlife treats us in this manner. As time goes by, I find this happens less and less. Often, their friendliness is better classed as a bold greediness, but I enjoy this, none the less. One of my favorite things to do when snorkelling in the Caribbean or the Red Sea is to tuck a bread-roll into my swimming trunks, then when surrounded by fishes, to break off little pieces and let them eat from my fingers. It is a great delight to watch fishes in such closeup conditions, and I marvel to observe all the details of their gills, fins, eyes, and colorful scales. How anyone can eat such beautiful and fascinating creatures like this is a constant source of amazement to me.
